STEP- Sixteen to Eighteen Programme

STEP PROGRAMME IN 2009 TAKES PLACE IN OUR NEW 6TH FORM CENTRE WITH RESOURCE CENTRE, COMPUTER SPACE, KITCHEN AND COMMON ROOM.

This British Council Accredited programme runs from late June to mid-August. It is aimed at young people looking to develop their English skills for use in later life, through work or study.

The course focuses on 2 key areas:

  • Academic English Skills, and
  • Interdisciplinary Language Skills.

Academic English Skills

In the mornings, STEP learners work on their academic language skills. They will develop writing, reading, research and presentation skills whilst building their knowledge of English grammar and vocabulary. Teachers use materials from the IELTS programme as the foundation of the programme, as well as authentic materials (media, film, internet) and other English language resources. Learners are encouraged to develop their skills through guided instruction, group and individual work.

This element of the programme will help learners get used to using English in real situations, as well as preparing them for the challenges of studying academically through English.

Interdisciplinary Language Skills

In the afternoons, STEP learners engage with their project for the week. They will develop their language skills through researching topics such as ‘The Commercial World’ or ‘Literature’. Learners will be expected to carry out research using a variety of resources, including internet, books, media, visits and guest speakers. Learners will work alone or in groups to develop presentations relating to the topic. Teachers will share their knowledge of the topics, as well as providing a language focus to the work covered.

This element of the programme will further develop learners’ academic English skills by encouraging them to use the language in real situations and engaging with contemporary themes.

To monitor and support student development, there are weekly tests and tutorials for all students.

The STEP Programme runs at our NEWLY EXTENDED STAR STREET SCHOOL. We are very happy to announce that we have acquired additional classroom and outdoor space at Star Street – much of this space will be fore the exclusive use of the STEP programme.

Please note that lunch is included in the fees for STEP from this year. Students are welcome to eat in the canteen, prepare their own food in the 6th form kitchen, or go out for lunch.
The STEP Programme runs at 21 Star Street, London, W2.
