IB Primary Years Programme (PYP)

This stage of the IB curriculum, for children aged 3-11, is focused on the nurturing and developing of young students as caring, active participants in a lifelong journey of learning.

Through its inquiry-led framework, which introduces a diverse list of subjects and transdisciplinary themes, the PYP challenges students to think for themselves and to take responsibility for their learning as they explore local and global issues and opportunities in real-life contexts.

Transdisciplinary Themes and Subjects

Subject areas studied in the PYP include languages, mathematics, science, social studies, the arts and personal, social and physical education.

These subjects are incorporated into six transdisciplinary themes, designed to broaden and deepen students' understanding:

  • Who we are
  • How we express ourselves
  • Where we are in place and time
  • Sharing the Planet
  • How the world works
  • How we organise ourselves

Additionally, all PYP students have the opportunity to learn more than one language from the age of seven. In the final year of the PYP, students demonstrate independence and responsibility for their own learning in The Exhibition, an important culmination of the programme.

Designed as a holistic programme for all age groups, students continue their learning into the MYP programme which culminates in the globally recognised IB Diploma.
